Cannery Orders Due

Just a friendly reminder that cannery orders are due for onions and refried beans (the refried beans are always popular, I use mine all the time!)

If you haven't signed up for anything already, please let me know what/how much you want by Monday Jan. 30th. I'll be submitting the order on Tuesday.

Also, I know some people still might have questions about the cannery and how things work. Here is some info you might find helpful. You can also find this on a printout in the RS books.

The cannery is a great resource available to members of the church which allows us to follow the counsel of the prophets and build our personal food storage. Each month we are encouraged to help work at the cannery, and in turn we may purchase food products. If you've never been before, now is a great time to start! Start building your long-term food storage buy purchasing even just a few cans.
What's Available
Each month one or two specific commodities will be available to order. (Please see the commodity of the month sheet for the schedule, as well as the price sheet for a full listing of available products.) Placing an order ensures that the amount you want of those items will be available to buy. The cannery also has a shelf with leftover commodities from previous months, so when you go you are also welcome to buy anything from that shelf. Twice a year there will be an open canning session when any product from the list can be ordered. There are also bulk items you can buy and then can yourself.
How The Food Is Packaged
Products are packaged in #10 cans. The exception is spaghetti, which is packaged in square pouches because it fits better. There have been instances when mice have eaten through the pouches, so cans are the preferred method. If you order a full case of product (6 cans) you will receive them in a cardboard box along with two plastic lids.
How To Place An Order
Fill out the cannery order sheet found in the RS books (not the price list) with your name, email, and how much of the specified commodities you would like. Then, the ward canning specialist will submit that order at the end of the month to the stake directors. If you're not sure if you'll be able to attend the cannery, sign up anyway! You don't pay for anything unless you pick it up, and any extra product will just go to the shelf for anyone to purchase.
How To Get Your Order
Products are canned two months after they are ordered. Example: if you order food in January, you get your order in March. This allows time for the order to be sent to Salt Lake City and the product to be sent to Albuquerque. You get your order by going to the cannery. You must stay at the cannery and help can all the product (everyone does everything, you don't just do your own). You can't just go pick it up and then leave.
When To Go To The Cannery
The Albuquerque West Stake canning day is the second Saturday of each month at 8am. If you have placed an order but cannot attend at our designated time, you are welcome to go the same Saturday at 1pm, or any other Saturday at 8am. Other stakes will be canning at those times, and if you placed a large order you may not get everything.
When And How To Pay
You don't pay for your order until you are at the cannery. They accept debit, credit, check, or cash. If paying by cash, you must bring the exact amount because they don't have a full register to provide change.
Rules Of The Cannery
No open-toed shoes or sandals are allowed.
No one under the age of 16 is allowed.
There is no childcare for children and babies.
Do not go if you are sick.
You cannot bring your own food to can there.
Non-members may only go if they are escorted by a church member.
Location
The cannery is located at 4400 Presidential Ave. NE Albuquerque, NM 87109. This is just west of I-25 and just south of Osuna, right off of Jefferson St. The phone number is 505-343-1905.
Home Canning
You may check out a canner or a pouch sealer from the stake canning directors, Jason and Sherie Nielsen. 505-897-2406 or nielsenjason@msn.com. You will still need to purchase cans, pouches, lids, and oxygen packs from the cannery on a Saturday morning.

We are moving and cannot take our cat with us as we will be in an apartment. She is about 4 years old, very friendly and patient with kids. If you know of anyone that wants a cat, let me know. Thanks.

New Cannery Day

Hi Sisters,

Our stake has been assigned a new cannery day for 2012. We will now be going on the SECOND Saturday of each month, rather than the first. We'll still go at 8am.

If you ordered anything in November (black and white beans), don't go this Saturday. Plan to go on the 14th. I'm going to try to attend, so let me know if you'd like a ride.
